The Topological "Fencepost Theorem" (Ueki-zan) of Blockchain Ledger Graphs: Euler-Poincare Vertex-Edge Duality (chi = V - E = 1), Odd-Leaf Merkle Tree Malleability (CVE-2012-2459), Confirmation-Depth Off-by-One Exploits, and Domain-Separated QFS-zkVM

In Monograph #202 (Record 23385034), we proved that Proof-of-Work (PoW) difficulty retargeting suffers from a temporal fencepost error (2015 intervals vs. 2016 blocks). Yet the relationship between elementary fencepost arithmetic (Ueki-zan) and blockchain architecture runs far deeper: a blockchain is, by mathematical definition, a 1-dimensional simplicial complex (a rooted path graph G_chain = (V, E)) whose blocks are "trees" (|V| = N) and whose cryptographic hash pointers (prev_hash) are "intervals" (|E| = N - 1). Every structural layer of a distributed ledger—from Genesis height indexing (h = 0) and confirmation depth counting to binary Merkle tree reduction and bit-shift subsidy halving—is governed by the Euler-Poincare fencepost identity chi(G) = V - E = 1. Building upon our 200th Grand Master Monograph (Record 23383049), our PoW cryptographic collapse proof (Record 23355921), and our temporal fencepost monograph (Record 23385034), this 203rd monograph establishes the General Structural Fencepost Theory of Blockchain Ledgers. We prove four foundational theorems: (1) Euler-Poincare Block-Link Duality & Confirmation-Depth Reorg Vulnerability: Confusing closed-interval block count (c = h_tip - h_tx + 1) with open-interval hash-link distance (d = h_tip - h_tx = c - 1) creates a 1-block finality gap exploited in cross-chain bridge and exchange double-spend attacks; (2) The Binary Merkle Tree Odd-Leaf Fencepost Bug (CVE-2012-2459): Because a binary tree over L leaves contains L - 1 internal reduction nodes, an odd leaf count (L = 2k + 1) leaves an unpaired "fencepost leaf." Bitcoin's legacy fix—duplicating the trailing leaf H(T_L || T_L)—destroys second-preimage resistance, allowing [T_1, T_2, T_3] and [T_1, T_2, T_3, T_3] to collide on the exact same Merkle root; (3) BIP-42 Undefined 64-Bit Shift & Smart-Contract Vesting Fenceposts: Proves how C++ bit-shift fencepost overflow (nSubsidy >>= 64) would have printed infinite coins without BIP-42; and (4) Domain-Separated Poseidon2 Sponge Trees in Goldilocks QFS-zkVM: Eliminates all structural fencepost vulnerabilities over F_p (p = 2^64 - 2^32 + 1). Abstract

In Monograph #202 (Record 23385034), we proved that Proof-of-Work (PoW) difficulty retargeting suffers from a temporal fencepost error (2015 intervals vs. 2016 blocks). Yet the relationship between elementary fencepost arithmetic (Ueki-zan) and blockchain architecture runs far deeper: a blockchain is, by mathematical definition, a 1-dimensional simplicial complex (a rooted path graph G_chain = (V, E)) whose blocks are "trees" (|V| = N) and whose cryptographic hash pointers (prev_hash) are "intervals" (|E| = N - 1). Every structural layer of a distributed ledger—from Genesis height indexing (h = 0) and confirmation depth counting to binary Merkle tree reduction and bit-shift subsidy halving—is governed by the Euler-Poincare fencepost identity chi(G) = V - E = 1. Building upon our 200th Grand Master Monograph (Record 23383049), our PoW cryptographic collapse proof (Record 23355921), and our temporal fencepost monograph (Record 23385034), this 203rd monograph establishes the General Structural Fencepost Theory of Blockchain Ledgers. We prove four foundational theorems: (1) Euler-Poincare Block-Link Duality & Confirmation-Depth Reorg Vulnerability: Confusing closed-interval block count (c = h_tip - h_tx + 1) with open-interval hash-link distance (d = h_tip - h_tx = c - 1) creates a 1-block finality gap exploited in cross-chain bridge and exchange double-spend attacks; (2) The Binary Merkle Tree Odd-Leaf Fencepost Bug (CVE-2012-2459): Because a binary tree over L leaves contains L - 1 internal reduction nodes, an odd leaf count (L = 2k + 1) leaves an unpaired "fencepost leaf." Bitcoin's legacy fix—duplicating the trailing leaf H(T_L || T_L)—destroys second-preimage resistance, allowing [T_1, T_2, T_3] and [T_1, T_2, T_3, T_3] to collide on the exact same Merkle root; (3) BIP-42 Undefined 64-Bit Shift & Smart-Contract Vesting Fenceposts: Proves how C++ bit-shift fencepost overflow (nSubsidy >>= 64) would have printed infinite coins without BIP-42; and (4) Domain-Separated Poseidon2 Sponge Trees in Goldilocks QFS-zkVM: Eliminates all structural fencepost vulnerabilities over F_p (p = 2^64 - 2^32 + 1).
