Enhancing Creative Thinking and Innovation Competencies of Oncology Nurses Through an Innovation Workshop: A Mixed-Methods Study
Background: Creativity and innovation are essential for oncology nurses in addressing complex care challenges; however, few brief continuing education interventions are offered in this field. Method: This study used a mixed-methods, single-group pretest–posttest design with assessments conducted at baseline, immediately post-workshop, and at 4-week follow-up ( n = 38). Outcomes were evaluated with the Marmara Creative Thinking Dispositions Scale and the Framework for Innovation Competencies Assessment. Post-workshop interviews were analyzed with Colaizzi's method. Results: A significant improvement over time was noted for creative thinking dispositions (self-discipline, search for innovation, courage, and total) and innovation competencies (creativity, initiative, and total) ( p < .05). Total innovation competency increased from 86.18 (standard deviation, 16.35) at baseline to 94.05 (standard deviation, 18.28) at follow-up. Thematic analysis showed themes of renewed awareness and motivation, professional growth, and barriers such as noise, hesitancy, and performance pressure. Conclusion: The structured short-term workshop was associated with enhanced creativity and innovation outcomes, providing valuable insights for designing innovation-focused, continuing education programs.
