An Investigation Into the Contribution of Informative Text Writing Skills to Reading Comprehension Achievement in Teaching Life Sciences
This study aims to determine the informative text writing skills and reading comprehension achievement of third-year pre-service primary school teachers. For this purpose, a one-group pre-test-post-test design, a quasi-experimental model based on the quantitative method, was implemented. The study involved 58 third-year students in the Department of Primary Education who took the Life Sciences Teaching course during the 2025-2026 academic year. A convenience sampling method was used to select the participants of the study. Data were collected using the “Reading Comprehension Achievement Test” developed by Karabay (2012) and the “Informative Text Writing Performance Rating Scale” developed by Dölek and Hamzadayı (2022). The results of the analyses indicated that the teacher candidates exhibited “moderate” levels of informative text writing skills in the Life Sciences Teaching course. In addition, it was concluded that the informative text writing skills differed by gender, with female teacher candidates showing greater improvement than their male counterparts. Furthermore, the teacher candidates demonstrated “moderate” levels of reading comprehension skills. The results obtained regarding whether there was a difference between the pre-test and post-test scores of the reading comprehension achievement of the teacher candidates suggest that their reading comprehension skills improved following the instructional and practice-based process.
