The Shape of Time: Translation, Cross-Scale Influence and the Grammar of Nested Cycles

Nested processes subject to translation and cross-scale influence generate a constrained grammar of time. This working paper derives that geometry for cycles nested inside cycles from three conditions: alignment fixes how cycles nest, with the triad as the smallest symmetric nesting; translation shifts a cycle's peak, and with it the whole cycle, in time; and influence adds the slope of a larger cycle to the cycles inside it. Inside a larger cycle of fixed length, translation produces a head-and-shoulders whose head lasts 1+3τ shoulders, never more than four, and translations compound across levels as (τ1+τ2)/(1+τ1τ2) within the bound set by the arrow of time. Under a rising larger cycle the head-and-shoulders becomes five waves, so Dow's three phases and Elliott's five waves are one shape at different slopes, and Elliott's three rules follow as propositions. The golden ratio appears not as a proportion markets prefer but as a phase boundary: where the head occupies φ/3 of the cycle, the onset of five waves and the onset of clean impulses coincide. Hierarchies of translated cycles also provide a generative mechanism for Mandelbrot's multifractal trading time. The geometry has a proved limit: uniform triadic nesting cannot reproduce Elliott's recursive count. Mechanical tests find these patterns in prices about as often as in random paths of nested swings. The geometry's distinctive prediction is temporal: the slope of a larger movement should predict when the smaller cycle that follows reaches its peak. In equity indices, cycles that follow the strongest fifth of larger moves peak about 7% of a cycle later than those after the weakest. The effect is modest (partial correlations of 0.06 to 0.18) but replicates with the rule fixed in advance and exceeds fitted GARCH (including asymmetric forms), Markov-switching and momentum models. In a pre-registered blind test on nine indices before 2000 it passed every pre-set criterion (+0.162). Two pre-registered tests in foreign exchange did not replicate it. The data establish the relationship in equity indices, for trough-defined cycles, not in financial markets generally; whether the geometry is its cause remains open. Abstract
