Redefining Matter and Mass: A Pedagogical Reformulation Based on Fermion Content, Binding Energy and Field Interactions
Traditional pedagogical definitions of "Matter" and "Mass" rely on circular reasoning. This paper proposes a clearer educational reformulation: matter is defined by its fermion constituents, mass is defined as rest-frame energy divided by c2, and bulk spatial occupation is governed by the Pauli exclusion principle. Crucially, we introduce a conceptual synthesis: matter is not merely a classical 'solid entity,' but a specific binding of ~99% energy and ~1% ultra-microscopic particles, which manifests and makes its presence experienced through interactions with universal fields and any type of waves (whether electromagnetic, acoustic, or mechanical). Just as echolocating organisms (like bats) use emitted waves to render objects perceptible, physical matter reveals its presence dynamically through field and wave interactions. This work is dedicated to Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam on his birth anniversary, in deep honor of his lifelong encouragement of open and accessible science.
