Careful Feminism: The Dialectics of Freedom and Identity in Urdu Popular Romance Fiction
Abstract Urdu popular fiction published in women’s digests in Pakistan frequently presents romance narratives that promote a carefully crafted brand of feminism—one that harmonizes with indigenous culture, religious values, and tactfully addresses patriarchy without condemning it in explicit terms. This research examines the heterosexual love stories published in two popular women’s magazines, Khawateen Digest and Kiran, to explore how women writers of Urdu popular romance fiction incorporate the nuanced national brand of feminism, here termed “careful feminism,” within the traditional genre structure of happily-ever-after romances. In its exploration of careful feminism, this research is scaffolded by theoretical frameworks from popular romance studies and feminist scholarship in digest genre fiction. Careful feminism manifests itself in the challenges and paradoxes linked to small acts of resistance in the everyday lives of ordinary Pakistani women.
