Research trends in industrial engineering and business development. Implications for curriculum and university-industry collaboration from a bibliometric review

Industrial engineering (IE) has played a central role in organizational growth and competitiveness, affecting business and industrial development (B&ID) through optimization, management, and production and service systems decision-making. This article presents a bibliometric analysis of the evolution of research on the impact of IE on B&ID from January 2000 to December 2025, and its implications for curriculum reflection, competency development, and university-industry collaboration. The results reveal a shift from traditional approaches, such as industrial management, product development, and optimization, to broader perspectives centered on sustainability, innovation, and collaborative work. Furthermore, four major thematic clusters and emerging themes such as value creation and Industry 4.0 were identified. These findings provide a basis for understanding how IE continues to contribute to B&ID and how the academic curriculum, university-industry collaboration, accreditation, and future research in this discipline can be better aligned with the evolving needs of the business sector.
