Ayurvedic Management of Chronic Hepatitis B: A Case Report
Background: Chronic hepatitis B is a viral infection associated with serious complications, including liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, highlighting the need for effective management strategies. Case Presentation: A 31-year-old male with a one-year history of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) positivity presented with intermittent anorexia and no other significant symptoms. The patient was monitored over a period of 16 months. Intervention: The patient was managed with an Ayurvedic treatment regimen aimed at supporting liver health. The interventions included Phalatrikādi Kvātha, A combination of Tamālakī, Bhṛṅgarāja, Madhuka, and Trikaṭu Cūrṇa, Mustā Ghana Vaṭī, Bhūmyāmalakī Svarasa, Bhṛṅgarāja Cūrṇa, and Āmalakī Rasāyana. Liver function tests (LFTs) and HBV DNA quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were used to assess the response to treatment. Outcome: HBV DNA levels decreased from 6318 IU/mL in June 2023 to <150 IU/mL by May 2024, indicating suppression of detectable viral DNA during the monitoring period. The patient's anorexia was relieved during the course of management. No adverse effects were reported during the treatment period. Conclusion: This case describes observed improvement in laboratory parameters during Ayurvedic management of chronic hepatitis B. However, findings from a single case cannot establish treatment efficacy or causality, and controlled clinical studies are required to determine the therapeutic efficacy and clinical relevance of Ayurvedic interventions in chronic hepatitis B.
