Integrating Value-based Healthcare into the Swedish Healthcare System

Healthcare systems worldwide face high demand due to ageing populations, infectious diseases and other factors. Moreover, healthcare costs continue to rise. The value-based healthcare (VBHC) concept has recently been embraced by policymakers as a framework to improve healthcare quality and reduce costs. In VBHC, healthcare providers are rewarded based on patient health outcomes. VBHC shifts the focus of healthcare systems from the volume and intensity of services provided to the quality of those services. The Swedish healthcare system used to be a model for the world, but this is no longer the case. It now faces challenges such as a shortage of healthcare workers, long waiting times, bureaucracy, an ageing population and poor-quality treatment. Researchers and policymakers have attempted to introduce VBHC into the Swedish healthcare system. However, few studies have addressed how to implement VBHC in Sweden or what challenges the system may encounter. This research presents the prerequisites and suggestions for implementing VBHC, and discusses the challenges of doing so in the Swedish healthcare system. By adopting VBHC, the Swedish healthcare system can benefit from improved quality of care and reduced healthcare costs.
