Conceptual Viewpoint on Inspirational, Oracle, and Tarot Cards as a Tool in Art Therapy Sessions
This viewpoint explores the integration of inspirational, oracle, and tarot cards as a tool in art therapy practice. Art therapists may be drawn to imagery and symbolic content of oracle and tarot cards, which aligns with depth psychology frameworks and supports work with metaphor, projection, and archetypal exploration. This article offers a critical reflection that explores how using such cards in practice can facilitate perspective-shifting, narrative re-storying, and access to unconscious material when used appropriately. A method for incorporating cards into sessions are presented with a case vignette provided as an example. Critical cultural and ethical considerations are addressed, including the importance of suitability for use with clients, theoretical grounding in depth psychology, informed consent about the cards’ limitations, and organizational policies. This viewpoint aims to contribute to critical scholarly dialogue on integrating unconventional tools into contemporary art therapy practice.
