Accounting effect or Cost control? A GAAP versus Non-GAAP ratio analysis of NVIDIA's Operating Expenses in First Quarter Fiscal 2024.

The decline in demand for PC and gaming companies in 2022-2023 succeeded by the need to reduce operating expenses by major industry titans. The Wall Street giant, NVIDIA's GAAP operating expense was reduced by 30% in the first quarter of fiscal 2024 while its non-GAAP operating expense rose 9%. The main purpose of this paper is whether the reduction in operating expense of NVIDIA in fiscal year 2024 was actually due to the cost control efficiency or other factors. The research methodology took into account the financial statements of the company and CFO commentary alongside financial ratios like operating expense ratio, gross and operating margins and the degree of operating leverage, excluding the $1.35 billion charge from the previous year's failed acquisition reveals that NVIDIA's GAAP operating expenses actually increased by roughly 13%. This one-time fee entirely caused the apparent drop in costs. During the initial inventory slump, management managed to keep spending flat before ramping up investment in personnel and computing power. At the same time, changing how long they use their equipment slightly reduced their reported expenses. Because the company posted an operating leverage of around 1.7 that quarter, costs remained sticky even as revenue dropped; the subsequent plunge in the expense ratio to 10% by Q4 FY24 came from massive revenue gains rather than budget cuts. Ultimately, because this is an isolated look at a single firm, these specific patterns cannot be used to predict how the rest of the tech industry behaves.
