A Call to Action for Nurse Researchers: Overcoming Barriers to Research Funding
AIM: This paper aims to thoughtfully examine the structural and cultural barriers that hinder nursing professionals-particularly in Italy-from accessing research funding and fully participating in research and scientific production. It also seeks to promote a professional and institutional dialogue by offering actionable strategies to foster a more supportive ecosystem for nursing research. DESIGN: This paper is a discursive paper that draws on international comparative examples, national data, and a synthesis of the literature. METHODS: A non-systematic literature review informs the discussion, drawing on peer-reviewed sources retrieved from PubMed, Scopus, and CINAHL, using keywords such as 'nursing,' 'funding,' 'grants' and 'research.' Selected international studies and funding models were examined to identify common barriers and enabling conditions for research development. RESULTS: The analysis highlights persistent obstacles to nurse-led research funding, including limited protected time for research activities, inadequate institutional infrastructure, and scarce career opportunities in academia. Comparisons with international countries show that targeted funding, integrated clinical-academic roles, and mentorship programs significantly enhance nursing research output and clinical impact. CONCLUSION: Despite its recognised value, nursing research in Italy remains marginalised due to systemic and cultural barriers. Addressing this requires a redefinition of nurses' roles in the healthcare system, with strategic institutional reforms and sustained investment in research capacity. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION: Dedicated funding streams, research-integrated clinical roles, capacity-building initiatives and cross-sector collaboration are essential to empower nurses as key contributors to evidence-based practice and sustainable healthcare systems. Unlocking this potential is essential to improving care quality, strengthening the profession's scientific standing, and ensuring the resilience of health systems facing increasing complexity and demands.
