Pramatha Chaudhuri's Birbaler Halkhata: Satire, Society, and the Modern Bengali Intellect

Pramatha Chaudhuri, a critic, author, editor and inventor of an original literary language, is a remarkable figure in the annals of modern Bengali literature. Chaudhuri wrote under the pen name 'Birbal' and developed a style of literature characterised by intellectual independence, conversational fluency, humour, sarcasm and social criticism. His famous anthology, Birbaler Halkhata, is an important commentary on the intellectual and social condition of colonial Bengal, and marks a crucial stage in the growth of contemporary Bengali literature. Chaudhuri does not take a moralistic tone in his social criticism. He uses wit and sarcasm to reveal hypocrisy, intellectual stagnation, superficiality, naive mimicry and the inconsistencies of a society split between old rules and current principles. This paper takes an example of literary modernism Birbaler Halkhata and studies its satirical devices, its representation of Bengali culture, its criticism of conventional norms and its significance in modernising Bengali consciousness. The study argues that Chaudhuri’s satire is entertaining to the readers and at the same time, it is an intellectual tool that challenges the conventional ideas and helps the readers to build their own opinions. His contribution to Bengali literary culture has been to struggle against the over-Sanskritization of literature and to advocate a more colloquial, organic and flexible mode of expression. Thus, Birbaler Halkhata is not just a collection of comic literature but also an important object of Bengali intellectual modernism.
