An Analysis of Translation Shifts in The Indonesian-English Translation of Pertamina’s Annual Report

This study analyzes translation shifts in the translation of Pertamina’s 2024 annual report from Indonesian to English. It aims to identify the types of translation shifts present and determine their distribution within the research data. The study employs a descriptive-qualitative approach, utilizing 18 translation instances purposively selected from the Pertamina Annual Report 2024. Data analysis is based on Catford’s (1965) classification of translation shifts, which encompasses level shifts and category shifts specifically structure shifts, class shifts, unit shifts, and intra-system shifts. The results reveal the presence of four types of category shifts: structure shifts, class shifts, unit shifts, and intra-system shifts. Class shifts were the most dominant type, accounting for 8 data (44.4%), followed by structure shifts (5 data; 27.8%), unit shifts (4 data; 22.2%), and intra-system shifts (1 data; 5.6%). No level shifts were found in the analyzed data. The findings indicate that translation shifts serve as a mechanism for linguistic adaptation, accommodating differences between the grammatical systems of Indonesian and English while maintaining clarity and contextual appropriateness in corporate communication.
