Conscious Electromagnetic Organization in an Eternalist Block Universe- Stress-Energy, Physical Transformation, and Global Constitution
Electromagnetic theories of consciousness propose that conscious experience may be physically realized through organized electromagnetic activity generated by nervous systems. McFadden’s conscious electromagnetic information (CEMI) field theory identifies consciousness with physically integrated, causally active information instantiated in the brain’s endogenous electromagnetic field. If this proposal is correct, consciousness-realizing electromagnetic organization is not a separate substance or physical force. It is a particular organization of ordinary field activity. The component premises examined here are not themselves proposed as new. CEMI supplies the conditional model of consciousness, ordinary relativistic physics supplies the electromagnetic energy-momentum and matter-field dynamics, and eternalism supplies the temporal ontology. The paper’s contribution is a synthesis developed from their conjunction. It distinguishes the temporal and phenomenal boundary of consciousness-realizing organization from the wider physical causal history in which that organization participates. Interactions occurring while a configuration is consciousness-realizing can alter physical conditions that enter successor configurations and further causal chains after the organization required for consciousness has ended. The argument is placed within a block-universe framework that combines eternalism with the further treatment of the complete spacetime history as a four-dimensional physical whole. Within that framework, locally emergent consciousness-realizing regions, their physical predecessors, and later configurations partly shaped through their activity occupy different regions of one complete history. Temporal emergence therefore does not exclude constitutive physical membership. The distinctive point is not that physical processes leave consequences, but that a bounded phenomenal organization can occur within a physical causal history whose consequences extend beyond that phenomenal boundary without extending the consciousness itself. This does not establish that consciousness created, sustains, grounds, or retrocausally influences the universe. It raises a further conditional question. Membership in the complete block does not by itself imply explanatory importance, but if the block ultimately depends upon deeper relations among its physical contents, consciousness-realizing regions and physical histories partly shaped through them cannot be excluded merely because consciousness emerges late in chronology. Whether those histories actually possess any deeper constitutive role remains open. CEMI supplies the specific electromagnetic case, while the relation among phenomenal boundaries, physical causal descent, temporal emergence, and global constitution is broader than that model.
