Evaluation of Stretchability in Displays: Overall and Local Stretch‐Recovery Properties

ABSTRACT Stretchable displays, increasingly recognized in wearable electronics and stretchable control systems like the jog dial in automotive systems, require both high stretchability and efficient recovery. However, as each scenario adopts its own customized evaluation method of stretched ratio according to study‐specific criteria and preferences, direct comparison of display performance is inherently limited. Additionally, in the display field, the lack of standardized methodology for recovery properties further complicates the comprehensive evaluation of stretchability, highlighting the limitations of relying solely on elongation at break. This study proposes a method for evaluating the characteristics of stretchability, including stretched and recovery ratios from both overall and local perspectives, based on experimental measurements under multi‐axial conditions. The overall deformation characteristics provide insights into the stretchability of display panels, and understanding local deformation assessment at the pixel scale is essential for evaluating the panel's reliability, particularly in terms of image quality and durability. A novel methodology for evaluating both overall and local stretchability is proposed, validated through Gage R&R analysis for repeatability and reproducibility. This approach offers a robust and comprehensive framework for assessing stretchable displays in real‐world applications and could serve as a standard methodology.
