Mobile Phone Addiction among Students in the Digital Era: Causes, Educational Consequences, and Strategies for Balanced Use

Mobile Phone Addiction among Students in the Digital Era: Causes, Educational Consequences, and Strategies for Balanced UseDr.Saloni Malviya(Assistant Professor, Idyllic Institute Of Management, Indore, M.P)Email: [email protected]. Samir Khan (Associate Professor , Idyllic Institute Of Management, Indore, M.P)Email: [email protected] phones have become an integral part of modern student life, transforming communication, learning, entertainment, and access to information. Although smartphones offer significant educational advantages, their excessive and uncontrolled use has emerged as an important concern for students, parents, teachers, and educational institutions. Mobile phone addiction, often discussed in research as problematic smartphone use, may be associated with reduced academic concentration, sleep disturbances, emotional difficulties, physical inactivity, and weakened face-to-face social interaction. The increasing availability of short-form videos, online gaming, social networking platforms, and instant messaging has further complicated students’ relationship with digital technology. This paper examines the major causes, educational consequences, psychological dimensions, and possible preventive strategies associated with excessive mobile phone use among students in the contemporary digital era. It adopts a conceptual research approach based on a narrative review of relevant academic literature and educational policy documents. The paper argues that the objective should not be to eliminate mobile technology from students’ lives but to promote responsible, purposeful, and balanced use. It recommends digital literacy education, classroom phone-use policies, parental guidance, healthy sleep routines, and student-centred awareness programmes. The paper concludes that coordinated action by schools, families, policymakers, and students can help ensure that mobile technology supports learning rather than undermining students’ academic and personal development. Keywords: Mobile phone addiction, smartphone use, students, digital education, academic performance, mental health, digital well-being, school education.
