A Cybernetic Framework for the Central Governor: Reinterpreting Subjective Exhaustion as Predictive Safety Margins in High-Capacity Analytical Athletes

Classical exercise physiology often interprets physical fatigue as an absolute peripheral failure caused by metabolic byproductaccumulation. The Central Governor Model (CGM) revised this paradigm by proposing that the central nervous system (CNS)regulates performance to prevent catastrophic tissue damage. However, existing CGM literature lacks a control-theoreticformulation describing how high-capacity analytical athletes process interoceptive threat signals. This paper introduces aCybernetic Framework for Central Inhibition, modeling the CNS as a feedforward predictive controller that operates on a conservative safety threshold (Smargin ≈ 30-40%). We demonstrate that subjective exhaustion in unconditioned yet high-capacity athletes represents a software-level "Soft Limit" rather than a physiological "Hard Limit." Furthermore, we formulate two biomechanical bypass mechanisms—Spinal Central Pattern Generator (CPG) entrainment via upper-body arm drive andIntra-Abdominal Pressure (IAP) stabilization—that enable the conscious override of predictive central inhibition, allowingsafe progression toward true biological capacity.

Abstract

Classical exercise physiology often interprets physical fatigue as an absolute peripheral failure caused by metabolic byproductaccumulation. The Central Governor Model (CGM) revised this paradigm by proposing that the central nervous system (CNS)regulates performance to prevent catastrophic tissue damage. However, existing CGM literature lacks a control-theoreticformulation describing how high-capacity analytical athletes process interoceptive threat signals. This paper introduces aCybernetic Framework for Central Inhibition, modeling the CNS as a feedforward predictive controller that operates on a conservative safety threshold (Smargin ≈ 30-40%). We demonstrate that subjective exhaustion in unconditioned yet high-capacity athletes represents a software-level "Soft Limit" rather than a physiological "Hard Limit." Furthermore, we formulate two biomechanical bypass mechanisms—Spinal Central Pattern Generator (CPG) entrainment via upper-body arm drive andIntra-Abdominal Pressure (IAP) stabilization—that enable the conscious override of predictive central inhibition, allowingsafe progression toward true biological capacity.
