Hard-work orientation as an individual difference: Passion and subjective vitality as sequential mechanisms of student engagement

Effort has a well-documented dark side: excessive work has been linked to burnout, and persistence after failure to hopelessness. Effort is also an individual difference, in that people vary in how strongly they believe effort is valuable and necessary for achievement. Drawing on self-determination theory, this study asks why an effort-oriented disposition might generate psychological resources rather than deplete them. Passion and subjective vitality were tested as a sequential motivational and energetic process linking hard-work orientation to student engagement, using three-wave time-lagged data from 524 students in northern India. Hard-work orientation was positively associated with passion, subjective vitality, and engagement. Both mediators carried significant indirect associations, and the serial indirect pathway through passion and subjective vitality was also significant. The findings locate the bright side of effort in how effort is regulated rather than in how much of it is expended.
