AI Agents and Agentic AI: What Sets Them Apart?

The distinction between AI agents and agentic AI is conceptually defensible when it separates an entitythat acts, the properties of its behavior, and the system that enables goal completion. However, theliterature and providers do not establish a universal boundary between two technologies. An agent cancarry out extended processes, and an agentic system can contain a single agent. This article examinesacademic antecedents, contrasts recent taxonomies, and compares terminology used by OpenAI,Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, and other providers. It offers an explicitly non-consensus teachingframework and explains why autonomy, agent count, content generation, learning, and authority shouldbe analyzed separately. Keywords: AI; intelligent agents; agentic AI; autonomy; multi-agent systems; language models;governance.
