Coworker and family relationships, work–family balance, workplace discrimination, and workplace well-being among immigrant workers in the United States

Workplace well-being plays a crucial role in increasing attendance, job performance, and overall productivity in an organization. While there is extensive research on well-being in U.S. native workers, fewer studies have examined the factors that affect the well-being of immigrant workers. The current study investigated the associations between work–family balance, workplace discrimination, and workplace well-being among immigrant workers. Drawing on the conservation of resources theory, which posits that family and coworker relationships serve as resources that help individuals cope with stress, we explored how coworker relationships, family cohesion, and family conflict mediated the associations of (1) work–family balance and (2) workplace discrimination with workplace well-being. All analyses controlled for years living in the United States and mainstream acculturation. A total of 107 participants (69.2% women) ranging in age from 18 to 60 years completed an online survey. Findings revealed that there was a strong positive correlation between work–family balance and workplace well-being. Additionally, this relationship was mediated by coworker relationships and family cohesion. Finally, coworker relationships mediated the relationship between discrimination and workplace well-being. In sum, our findings highlight the importance of coworker and family relationships in explaining the workplace well-being of immigrants.
