NARRATIVES OF UZBEK-SPEAKING SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN: A QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS

The article presents a qualitative analysis of the oral narratives of 11 Uzbek-speaking children in grades 1-5, elicited with the “Cat Story” picture sequence of the MAIN (Multilingual Assessment Instrument for Narratives) protocol. The analysis focuses on three areas: lexical choice when expressing the same event, interpretation of the pictures, and expressions of internal states and background. The children responded to the same visual stimulus with different lexical choices and filled in details not visible in the pictures (direction of movement, causes) in different ways. Because of the small sample, the findings are not generalized by age and are presented as observations for further research.
