Ornamentation as Expression in Isaac Albéniz's Evocación from Iberia
This presentation explores ornamentation, specifically mordents, as an expressive element in Isaac Albéniz’s Evocación from Iberia. Rather than functioning as surface decorations, the mordents in this work add to the musical character, harmonic colour, and expressive nuance. The work also reflects influences from cante flamenco traditions and vocal inflection. In addition, the presentation examines pedagogical approaches to teaching expressive interpretation through the use of emotional imagery. Through focused musical examples, this presentation encourages performers to approach ornamentation as an integral component of musical meaning and expression.
