The adaptive evolution of instructional leadership: A science mapping analysis of research on educational leadership and student learning outcomes

For more than four decades, research has shown that educational leadership is positively associated with student learning outcomes, yet predominantly through indirect and mediated pathways. At the same time, the conceptual frameworks used to explain this relationship have multiplied and diversified. This study addresses the paradox of empirical stability alongside conceptual proliferation by examining how instructional leadership has evolved within leadership-learning research. Using a longitudinal science mapping approach, 420 articles published between 1974 and 2025 were analyzed across three developmental periods. The findings indicate increasing structural integration among leadership-related themes rather than evidence of complete thematic replacement across successive periods. Transformational, distributed, and related leadership themes exhibited increasing structural overlap around mediating mechanisms such as teacher capacity, professional learning, trust, and organizational climate. Within this process, instructional leadership retained structural centrality. Its persistence is not explained by superior effect sizes, but by conceptual adaptability. Over time, instructional leadership expanded beyond a narrow supervisory model to incorporate relational, emotional, and distributed dimensions. Taken together with previous research, these structural patterns may be interpreted as supporting the argument that instructional leadership has evolved into an adaptive meta-framework that organizes mediated and context-sensitive explanations of how leadership shapes conditions for teaching and learning.
