Seismic resilience of high-rise buildings: optimizing active tuned mass dampers with advanced control strategies considering soil-structure interaction

This paper investigates the seismic control of a 40-story high-rise building equipped with a Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) and an Active Tuned Mass Damper (ATMD) while considering Soil–Structure Interaction (SSI) effects. The structure is evaluated under four foundation conditions, including fixed-base, soft-soil, medium-soil, and dense-soil cases. A Genetic Algorithm (GA) is used to optimize the design parameters of the TMD and ATMD systems, including the mass ratio, frequency ratio, damping ratio, and, for the ATMD, the control gain of the New Algorithm (NA). The NA strategy is implemented as a displacement-based active control law that generates a counteracting control force through the ATMD system. Time-history analyses are performed under selected earthquake records to compare the uncontrolled, passive TMD-controlled, and active ATMD-controlled responses. The results show that the NA-based active control system considerably improves seismic performance. For the structure on soft soil, the ATMD reduces the average displacement and acceleration responses by 46.4% and 36.7%, respectively. For the structure on dense soil, the corresponding reductions are 42.0% and 13.6%, respectively, compared with the uncontrolled case. These findings highlight the effectiveness of the proposed GA-assisted NA-based ATMD framework in improving the dynamic response of the studied high-rise structure under the considered seismic and soil conditions.
