Electrically Programmable Light‐Thermal Regulation With Two‐Dimensional Liquid Crystals
ABSTRACT Smart agriculture concerns the precise regulation of light and thermal environments to improve energy efficiency and optimize plant growth. However, current approaches predominantly rely on energy‐intensive active systems or static technologies that cannot adapt to the evolving spectral and thermal demands of plants. Here, we report a two‐dimensional inorganic liquid crystal system in which a frequency‐controlled electric field dynamically reorients nanosheets, enabling dynamic control of both light availability and ambient temperature. The electro‐optic response of α−zirconium phosphate nanosheets is extended into the visible–near‐infrared region through collective reorientation of the nanosheets, increasing the Kerr coefficient by an order of magnitude to 9.49 × 10 −4 m V −2 . The enhanced response enables broadband spectral programmability within a single device, allowing simultaneous modulation of the spectral composition of light and the thermal flux. The resulting smart window exhibits continuous full‐color optical tunability and achieves temperature regulation of up to 12–19°C under solar irradiation while operating at low power consumption. When implemented in a plant cultivation system, the platform alleviates heat stress, reduces water evaporation, and enables programmable control of plant morphology and nutrient accumulation. This work demonstrates a materials‐based strategy for integrated light and thermal management in intelligent agricultural systems.
