Taxonomy for Transformation: A Blueprint for Bridging Science, Capacity, and Biodiversity Action

The TETTRIs project sets out to strengthen Europe’s taxonomic capacity by equipping both current and future taxonomists with the tools, skills, and infrastructures needed to meet growing biodiversity challenges. Building on an extensive suite of project outputs, this Blueprint for Taxonomy for Transformation: Bridging Science, Capacity, and Biodiversity Action (the Blueprint) translates TETTRIs’ results into a practical, forward‑looking guide designed to support capacity building in taxonomy, sustained professional development, and knowledge transfer across the taxonomic community and beyond to a variety of actors involved in biodiversity conservation. It offers strategic direction for policymakers and funders, and actionable guidance for practitioners of different backgrounds and expertise level working to secure and expand taxonomic expertise. As a core piece of this Blueprint, the TETTRIs Cookbook provides adaptable, hands‑on “recipes” that enable institutions, researchers, citizen scientists, and other stakeholders to replicate and extend successful approaches, fostering new initiatives and collaborations to increase taxonomic capacity across geographical, disciplinary and expertise boundaries. Together, these resources outline a vision for a modern, interoperable European system for integrative taxonomy capable of producing FAIR, up to date species‑level data for science, policy, and society that anchors in robust and skilled human capacities. By showcasing pathways, practical models, and satellite project case studies, the Blueprint establishes a roadmap for long‑term sustainability and cross‑sector partnerships for capacity building, ensuring taxonomy remains a cornerstone of biodiversity knowledge and governance in Europe.
