Digital communication in Peru’s public museums: a mixed analysis

Digital transformation has changed the way museums interact with their audiences, creating new opportunities to expand access to cultural heritage. The objective of this study was to analyze the digital communication strategies used by public museums in Peru using a mixed methodological approach. In the quantitative phase, 27 digital communication indicators were evaluated in the 56 public museums recognized by the Ministry of Culture, while in the qualitative phase, semi-structured interviews were conducted with five key informants from the museum sector. The results show a widespread presence of digital platforms, but with limited levels of updating, interaction, and adoption of immersive technologies. Institutional barriers related to budgetary constraints, bureaucratic processes, and technological infrastructure gaps were also identified. The study concludes that digital communication in Peruvian museums is in a transition phase toward hybrid models that integrate face-to-face and virtual experiences to strengthen cultural participation.
