An In-Depth Review of the Environmental and Human Health Impacts of Chemical Pesticide Use
The extensive use of chemical pesticides in modern agriculture has significantly contributed to increased crop productivity and food security; however, it has also raised serious concerns regarding environmental integrity and human health. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the environmental and health impacts associated with pesticide application, including their classification, environmental fate, toxicological mechanisms, detection methods, regulatory frameworks, and mitigation strategies. Evidence indicates that pesticides persist in soil, water, and air, where they undergo complex transport, degradation, and bioaccumulation processes, ultimately affecting ecosystems and biodiversity. Human exposure occurs through multiple pathways, leading to both acute poisoning and chronic health effects such as neurological disorders, endocrine disruption, reproductive toxicity, and carcinogenic risks. Advanced analytical techniques, including GC-MS, HPLC, and LC-MS, have enhanced pesticide monitoring in environmental and biological systems. Furthermore, global regulatory frameworks and risk assessment models play a crucial role in minimizing exposure and ensuring food safety. Sustainable approaches such as Integrated Pest Management (IPM), biopesticides, organic farming, and nanotechnology-based delivery systems offer promising alternatives for reducing chemical dependency. Strengthening policy enforcement, public awareness, and sustainable agricultural practices is essential for mitigating the adverse impacts of pesticide use
