Fuel Supply Reliability in West Kalimantan: The Role of River Conditions in Fuel Distribution to Sanggau and Sintang

This independent document-based study examines the role of river conditions in regional fuel distribution reliability in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. Fuel distribution to inland regencies, such as Sanggau and Sintang, relies on transportation networks connected to river routes like the Kapuas and Melawi rivers. In February 2026, official government updates reported operational disruptions caused by shallowing and reduced water levels in these rivers. By reviewing official public documents from BPH Migas and the Directorate General of Oil and Gas under the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, this paper analyzes reported logistical challenges, reviews discussed emergency mitigation options (such as using floating barges as temporary jetties for direct unloading from tankers into tank trucks), and distinguishes reported facts from personal analysis. The study finds that river conditions present notable operational challenges to inland fuel delivery, though government agencies reported that overall supply remained controlled, even as the Directorate General of Oil and Gas acknowledged fuel queues and scarcity concerns. Finally, the paper outlines limitations of the study and suggests options for future feasibility studies on road transport backups, river dredging, and inland storage expansion.
