A Survey of Students’ Perceptions on the Use of Physics Articles in ESP Courses

This study examines how the use of authentic physics articles in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses helps undergraduate physics students develop their English language skills. The research used a quantitative descriptive design, surveying 70 students to identify the challenges they face, such as difficult scientific vocabulary, complex grammar, and hard-to-understand scientific ideas. Even though these challenges exist, most students believe that reading the authentic physics articles helps them build vocabulary, improve their academic writing, think critically, and stay up to date with global science. The study shows that while real materials are beneficial for both language and content learning, students still need explicit teaching especially those who aren’t very fluent in English. The study recommends that ESP programs use subject-specific materials and appropriate teaching methods to provide more effective and valuable learning experiences for science students.

Abstract

This study examines how the use of authentic physics articles in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses helps undergraduate physics students develop their English language skills. The research used a quantitative descriptive design, surveying 70 students to identify the challenges they face, such as difficult scientific vocabulary, complex grammar, and hard-to-understand scientific ideas. The study shows that while real materials are beneficial for both language and content learning, students still need explicit teaching especially those who aren’t very fluent in English. The study recommends that ESP programs use subject-specific materials and appropriate teaching methods to provide more effective and valuable learning experiences for science students.
