An Iintroduction to AIS CR. The excavation ends. The evidence lives on. Keeping archaeological evidence findable, connected and reusable.

How can archaeological evidence remain accessible and useful long after fieldwork ends? This presentation introduces the Archaeological Information System of the Czech Republic (AIS CR), a national research infrastructure jointly operated by the Institutes of Archaeology of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague and Brno. Its core component, the Archaeological Map of the Czech Republic (AMCR), connects fieldwork documentation, professional data curation, long-term digital preservation, and public access through an integrated ecosystem of services. Beyond archiving, AIS CR supports research, heritage management, citizen science, and public engagement through interconnected databases, digital tools, and open interfaces. The presentation highlights the infrastructure’s main services, its technical foundations, and ongoing developments, including AI-assisted processing of archaeological documentation within the European ATRIUM project. The underlying goal is simple: to preserve archaeological evidence together with its context, make it discoverable and reusable, and enable new research questions long after the original investigation.
