The Fragility of Proof-of-Work under Planetary Disruption: Why Lunar Structural Cleavage and Tidal Catastrophes Trigger Systemic Collapse in the Bitcoin Network

Abstract: A pervasive ideological narrative within modern decentralized finance asserts that Bitcoin (BTC) represents an indestructible, apolitical, and antifragile monetary asset—often popularized by the cultural maxim "To the Moon" and promoted as an unassailable store of value capable of surviving civilizational collapse. This monograph establishes the thermodynamic, network-topological, and geophysical refutation of this premise. We prove that the Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus mechanism is an exceptionally fragile, dissipative thermodynamic system strictly coupled to the uninterrupted stability of Earth's physical energy grid, low-latency terrestrial telecommunications, and stable planetary boundary conditions. Connecting our recent geomechanical proof of lunar structural vulnerability—wherein the Moon's 1,000-km brittle lithosphere and undamped high-Q resonance render it susceptible to catastrophic planar cleavage under critical shock thresholds (E_cleave ≈ 10^23–10^24 J)—we model the systemic macroeconomic and technical fallout on the Bitcoin network following lunar bifurcation: (1) Gravitational quadrupole perturbations from dual orbiting lunar fragments induce massive oceanic tidal surges, severing transoceanic subsea fiber-optic cables that carry > 98% of global Bitcoin peer-to-peer (P2P) mempool and block propagation traffic; (2) The resulting partition of the global internet fractures the mining topology into disjoint, desynchronized network islands, precipitating catastrophic chain reorganizations; (3) The loss of regional power grids drops active global hashrate by ≥ 85% in hours, triggering the dreaded PoW Difficulty Retargeting Death Spiral: because Nakamoto consensus adjusts difficulty only once every 2,016 blocks (≈ 14 days at nominal block times), an 85% hashrate collapse stretches inter-block generation times to τ_block > 66.7 minutes, requiring over three months of wall-clock time to reach the next retargeting boundary; (4) Transaction fee congestion explodes while mempool backlogs exceed hardware memory limits, freezing economic finality and inducing total liquidity evaporation ("abon" / complete systemic failure); and (5) We analyze the discrete fence-post ("Uekizan") boundary trap in Nakamoto block height serialization, proving that algorithmic immutability collapses in physical crises, forcing contentious social-layer hard forks that destroy Bitcoin's foundational monetary thesis.
