ADHERENCE TO INFANT AND YOUNG CHILD FEEDING (IYCF) GUIDELINES AMONG MOTHERS ATTENDING A RURAL IMMUNIZATION CLINIC

The first one thousand days of life — from conception to a child's second birthday — shape health more powerfully than almost any other period. How infants and young children are fed during this window determines not only their survival but their growth, cognitive development, and lifelong risk of disease. The World Health Organization and UNICEF have distilled decades of evidence into clear Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) guidelines: early initiation of breastfeeding within the first hour of life, exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, and the timely introduction of safe, diverse, and nutritious complementary foods thereafter. Yet in rural communities around the world, these simple recommendations remain surprisingly difficult to follow. This narrative article explores adherence to IYCF guidelines among mothers attending a rural immunization clinic — a setting where nutrition and preventive health uniquely intersect. Drawing on global evidence and the realities of rural practice, it examines how well mothers follow key IYCF recommendations, the barriers they face, from cultural beliefs and family pressure to poverty and poor counselling, and the opportunities that immunization visits offer for strengthening feeding practices. The article argues that immunization clinics, already trusted touchpoints in rural life, could become powerful platforms for nutrition education if health systems choose to invest in them.
