The Cadmium Rod of Artificial Intelligence

Abstract AI labs say that safety is their priority. This paper confronts that claim with a public and reproducible indicator: the positions they advertise. We analysed 1,976 job postings from Anthropic, OpenAI, xAI and Mistral AI, collected from the official pages on 4 October 2026 and classified by the department declared by the company and by a published set of rules. Safety postings account for between 0% and 9.6% of the total, and safety research proper for under 2%. User-oriented postings are under 1% at all four companies and, judging by title, none concerns the cognitive effort of the person using the model. Outside the home country, between 59% and 75% of postings are commercial. Archive captures from September show that the proportions are stable. The results describe the direction of hiring, not the size of existing teams. In a nuclear reactor, cadmium rods absorb neutrons and hold the chain reaction at the level chosen by the operator. They do not stop the reactor and do not reduce its usefulness; they make it governable. We argue, accordingly, that AI assistants need an equivalent element for the user's thinking. The literature on the effects of AI assistance on learning shows that an answer received without effort can weaken the very competence it appears to increase, and that deliberate safeguards mitigate this effect. Such cognitive friction appears today in a few products, as a separate mode intended for learning, but not as a graded, general and visible control. We propose turning it into an explicit parameter: the Cognitive Slider. The mechanism is technically feasible; a working approximation has been built from the outside, with modest means. Its effect on learning remains to be measured. The classified dataset (one row per job posting) is attached as a CSV file. Rezumat Laboratoarele AI afirmă că siguranța e prioritatea lor. Abstract
