Classification of Elliptic Curves on Fano Surfaces via Néron–Severi Lattice — E8 Intelligence Research
FINDING: The classification of elliptic curve configurations on Fano surfaces (of smooth cubic threefolds) is complete, enumerating the number of such curves and their intersection patterns, with the Néron–Severi lattice as the organizing structure. | MATH: Fano surface \(S\) of a smooth cubic threefold \(X \subset \mathbb{P}^4\) has \(K_S^2 = 45\), \(c_2(S)=27\), \(q=5\), \(p_g=10\). Elliptic curves \(E \subset S\) satisfy \(E^2 = -1\) (exceptional) or \(E^2 = -2\) (rational curves of self-intersection \(-2\)); the Néron–Severi group \(\mathrm{NS}(S)\) has rank 45 and discriminant 3^5·5^2·7 (from the intermediate Jacobian lattice). The classification (arXiv:0804.1861v2) gives the number \(t\) of elliptic curves and their mutual intersections — the maximal configurations correspond to \(t = 27\) (the 27 lines on the cubic threefold, each giving a distinct elliptic curve on \(S\)) with intersection matrix related to the \(E_6\) root lattice (since 27 = 3·9, and the incidence graph of li Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
