Public and mobile libraries in the aftermath of the earthquake

This qualitative study examines the roles and experiences of public and mobile libraries in the aftermath of the February 6, 2023, earthquake in Türkiye. Employing a phenomenological design, in-depth interviews were conducted with 12 librarians and 2 administrators involved in disaster response efforts in affected provinces. The research aims to explore the services provided, challenges faced, and cooperation mechanisms in the disaster context, as well as to identify recommendations for future preparedness. Findings reveal that while Turkish public libraries lack formal disaster preparedness plans, mobile libraries played a critical role in delivering psychosocial support, logistical aid, and educational resources in the aftermath of the earthquake. Spontaneous collaboration with various organisations, such as the Ministry of Social Services and NGOs, has enabled effective service delivery despite logistical challenges and insufficient prior training. This study emphasizes the importance of strengthening communication networks, developing comprehensive disaster response strategies, and enhancing the capacity of mobile libraries by upgrading equipment and providing personnel training. It highlights the necessity of systematic preparedness, which involves disaster education, planning, and simulation exercises, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children and individuals with disabilities. The findings demonstrate that mobile libraries significantly contribute to community resilience and recovery, underscoring their vital role in emergency situations. This research offers valuable insights for policymakers, library administrators, and stakeholders aiming to improve disaster management and library services in the context of Türkiye’s seismic risks. The study advocates for proactive, coordinated, and well-resourced disaster preparedness frameworks.
