Current Trends in Vein Care Use in Italy Based on a Nationwide Survey: Focus on Sclerotherapy

Background/Objectives: Sclerotherapy is a common, minimally invasive, outpatient procedure used to treat varicose and spider veins. However, there is significant variability in its practice with regard to techniques, sclerosant types and concentrations, and treatment protocols. The aim of this survey was to collect up-to-date, real-world data on how sclerotherapy is performed in everyday clinical practice in Italy. Methods: A total of 180 Italian healthcare professionals (general and vascular surgeons, phlebologists, angiologists, and primary care physicians) were invited to participate in this survey; 120 (66.6%) completed the survey. The collected data included years of practice, types and concentrations of sclerosing agents used, preparation methods, associated medical treatments, use of auxiliary medical devices, prophylactic anticoagulation, compression therapy, walking after the procedure, and follow-up duration. Results: Responses showed wide variability among healthcare professionals in their choice of sclerosing agents, concentrations, and preparation methods. The most commonly reported practices included detergent sclerosants, foam preparation using the Tessari method, and post-treatment compression. Compression therapy and early mobilization were widely adopted, and antithrombotic prophylaxis was frequently reported before and after the procedure. Considerable variability was also observed in the reported use of drugs and dietary supplements associated with sclerotherapy. Conclusions: The findings highlight substantial variability in reported therapeutic approaches among participating physicians. These areas of heterogeneity warrant further investigation and consideration in future clinical guidance.
