Multiple Scattering Model for the Coherent Optical Response of Correlated Disordered Plasmonic Metasurfaces

ABSTRACT Disordered plasmonic metasurfaces constitute a versatile platform for tailoring light scattering. Structural correlations are a key tuning parameter of disordered metasurfaces, yet their impact on the coherent optical response of plasmonic nanostructures remains underexplored. Here, we present a theoretical model for the coherent reflection and transmission of light from plasmonic metasurfaces with correlated disorder. The model relies on the quasicrystalline approximation in multiple scattering theory and leads to analytical expressions for the complex‐valued reflection and transmission coefficients of monolayers of dipolar particles with arbitrary pair‐correlation functions. The accuracy of the model is demonstrated by comparison with coupled dipoles simulations for different types of correlated disorder (short‐range correlated and stealthy hyperuniform) and environments (homogeneous and layered). Our study shows that structural correlations profoundly affect the coherent optical response of disordered plasmonic metasurfaces, further highlighting the potential of disorder engineering to optimize optical functionalities, such as goniochromatic effects for security printing and visual appearance design.
