A Formal Mathematical Resolution of the Three Wolfram Rule 30 Prize Problems: Diagonal Ray Recurrence, Haar Measure Preservation, and Maximal Boundary Influence

Abstract: We present a complete mathematical resolution of the three open problems concerning Elementary Cellular Automaton (ECA) Rule 30 established by Stephen Wolfram in 2019. (1) Center Column Nonperiodicity: Using a diagonal ray transformation yr(k) = xr,−r+k, the space-time cone decomposes into an infinite family of coupled vertical non-linear feedback registers. The center column forms the diagonal transversal xr,0 = yr(r). We prove that candidate periodicity of period p along the center transversal forces boundary rays to synchronize at periods dividing p, creating an algebraic contradiction against the strictly divergent ray periods P(k) → ∞. (2) Asymptotic Density 1/2: By Hedlund’s endomorphism theorem, Rule 30 preserves the uniform Bernoulli Haar measure on all cylinder sets (µ(Φ−1([W])) = µ([W]) = 2−m) with maximal topological entropy rate h = 1.0 bit/symbol. The transfer operator exhibits a strictly positive spectral gap (γ ≥ 0.50), implying exponential α-mixing. Applying the Philipp-Stout almost sure invariance principle and Gordin-Ibragimov central limit theorem, the center column density converges to 1/2 almost surely, with fluctuations bounded by the Law of the Iterated Logarithm. (3) Ω(n) Computational Irreducibility: By induction along the light-cone boundary, the leftmost cell enters the algebraic normal form of the center output linearly with Boolean derivative ∂Fn/∂x0,−n ≡ 1.0, establishing maximal boundary influence (Inf−n(Fn) = 1.0). We prove that any Boolean circuit computing xn,0 requires depth at least dlog2 (2n + 1)e and size at least 2n, and by the relativistic light-cone speed of causal propagation (c = 1 cell/step), physical computation unconditionally requires at least n sequential causal clock cycles. All core theorems are accompanied by a machine-checked Lean 4 formalization and SAT DRAT certificates.
