Diabetes Mellitus: Classification, Epidemiology, Conventional & Herbal drug Treatment

AbstractDiabetes is an insulin resistance syndrome characterised by the persistenthyperglycaemia resulting from impaired insulin secretion, insulin resistance or acombination of both. Scenario DM is became a major worldwide concern due to itsrapid increase in occurrence. Insulin is a hormone which functions as glucoseregulator. There are various types of Diabetes known with different - different name asper the conditions diabetes occurs in the body such as Type1 DM, Type 2DM,Gestational DM & Juvenile DM. While allopathic ant diabetic drugs provide effectiveglycaemic control, still their long term use may be associated with side effects andtherapeutic limitations so it is essential to investigate novel and safe sources of antidiabetic agents. Phytomedicines and the chemicals obtained from the plants consideredbecause of their various pharmacological activities and capability to regulate severalbiological target involved in glucose homeostasis.
