MEDICAL REHABILITATION OF MUSCULOSKELETAL DISORDER

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are conditions affecting the muscles, bones, joints, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and other supporting structures of the body. They may be acute or chronic and can result from trauma, repetitive movements, poor posture, aging, genetic factors, occupational hazards, or inflammatory diseases. Common musculoskeletal disorders include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, low back pain, tendinitis, bursitis, fractures, and muscle strains. The main symptoms are pain, swelling, stiffness, muscle weakness, restricted joint movements, and difficulty performing daily activities. Diagnosis is based on medical history, physical examination, and investigations such as X-rays, CT scans, MRI, blood tests, and bone mineral density measurements, depending on the condition.Treatment aims to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, restore mobility, and prevent disability. Management includes medications, physiotherapy, therapeutic exercises, heat and cold therapy, occupational therapy, and lifestyle modifications. In severe cases, surgical intervention may be necessary. Medical rehabilitation plays an essential role in improving muscle strength, joint flexibility, balance, coordination, and functional independence.Prevention involves maintaining correct posture, regular physical activity, a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, maintaining a healthy body weight, using proper workplace ergonomics, and avoiding repetitive strain. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment help reduce complications and improve quality of life. A multidisciplinary approach involving doctors, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists is essential for effective management and long-term recovery.
