Remote Patient Monitoring in Guam: A Pathway to Implementation
ABSTRACT: This case study examines the feasibility of implementing Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) in Guam to improve chronic disease management and expand access to care in a Medically Underserved Area. While challenges exist, Guam's strategic role as a communication hub for Micronesia, supportive telehealth policies, and an island-wide broadband expansion initiative create favorable conditions for RPM adoption. Drawing on an initial feasibility trial conducted between a Nurse Practitioner in the contiguous United States and a Registered Nurse in Guam, the authors propose a four-phase implementation pathway. Successful RPM integration in Guam could reduce hospital admissions, enhance chronic disease outcomes, generate cost savings, and serve as a scalable model for other remote and resource-limited settings.
