Resination-Assembled Soft Multiaxial Molecular Ferroelectrics Enable Exceptional Low-Electric Field Polarization Switching
Abstract Resination of soft polymer ferroelectrics has recently emerged as a promising avenue to assemble high- performance electroactive materials, due to the coupling of ferroelectricity with enhanced mechanical and processable merits. However, it remains a huge challenge to stabilize ferroelectricity and dipolar activity at the resin–ferroelectric interface. For the first time, we adopt here the resination assembling strategy into the soft molecule-based ferroelectric (BZA)2(DMA)BiI6 (1, BZA = benzylammonium; DMA = dimethylammonium), which enables the unusual ferroelectric behavior of low-electric field switching of polarization. Compound 1 is a high-temperature multiaxial ferroelectric with six possible equivalent polarization directions and a low coercive electric field, arising from its stepwise phase transitions around 350 K (Tc). Strikingly, the precise resination of 1 with the epoxy-matrix composite yields a highly loaded composite with a microscopic cross-linked structure, whose polarization can be switched under a quite low coercive electric field (Ec ∼ 3.8 kV/cm). These shape-customized ferroelectric resin wafers of 1 have superior antielectric fatigue attributes after ∼104 cycles. Moreover, these wafers exhibit enhanced resistance to localized deformation, evidenced by a 30.9% decrease in maximum penetration depth relative to the bulk single crystals. As the first study on the resination of molecular ferroelectrics, our findings bridge the gap between molecular ferroelectrics and material engineering, which highlights the application potential of resinated molecular ferroelectrics.
