Authentic Personal Branding: Mindfulness As A Foundation For Teaching Students To Build Meaningful Professional Identities
In the current landscape of education, personal branding is often taught as a strategic tool for visibility and differentiation. However, this emphasis on performance and self-promotion can lead students to curate identities that prioritize external validation over inner alignment. This paper proposes a new pedagogical framework, the Mindfulness Skills Framework for Authentic Personal Branding, grounded in mindfulness as a foundation for self-awareness and identity development, and Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory. Drawing on the eight-skill mindfulness model – Awareness, Compassion, Curiosity, Energy, Appreciative Joy, Inner Calm, Focus, and Equanimity – the framework supports students in crafting personal brands that are not only marketable but meaningful and authentic. Rather than treating branding as a tactical exercise in differentiation, the Mindfulness Skills Framework reframes it as a reflective process of alignment between inner clarity and outward communication. This approach is designed to help students to craft personal brands that are credible, competitive, meaningful, and human-centered.
