Autonomous AI-Driven Security Operations Centers (Autonomous SOC): Agentic Orchestration, Real-Time Incident Response, and Multi-Agent Defensive Playbooks

Abstract—Contemporary enterprise Security Operations Centers (SOCs) are on the brink of systemic collapse driven by three converging factors: exponential alert fatigue (>25,000 uninvestigated alerts daily per enterprise), acute global cybersecurity workforce shortages, and the emergence of automated, machine-speed cyber threats executing multi-stage Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs) in sub-minute time horizons. Traditional Security Orchestration, Automation, and Response (SOAR) platforms rely on brittle, rigid, hard-coded linear playbooks that fail when adversaries deviate slightly from known MITRE ATT&CK patterns. The paradigm of the Autonomous AI-Driven SOC (Autonomous SOC) establishes a transformative architecture that replaces rigid rule engines with specialized collaborative Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) powered by fine-tuned Large Language Models (LLMs) and Graph Neural Networks (GNNs). In an Autonomous SOC, decentralized cognitive agents autonomously triage alerts, execute deep forensic graph correlation, synthesize non-linear incident playbooks, isolate compromised endpoints via zero-trust API invocations, and conduct automated counter-adversarial negotiations. However, deploying autonomous agentic execution in mission-critical defensive infrastructure exposes severe risks: catastrophic hallucination loops during remediation, prompt injection propagation across defensive pipelines, decision deadlock, and unauthorized disruption of legitimate enterprise operations. This paper presents an exhaustive, mathematically formal technical investigation and empirical benchmark of Autonomous SOC architectures. We formalize incident response as a decentralized Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (Dec-POMDP) under dynamic threat uncertainty, model consensus verification over cryptographic remediation DAGs, and establish a dual-tier human-on-the-loop (HOTL) safety gating mechanism. Furthermore, we construct an enterprise SOC evaluation testbed spanning 10,000 multi-stage attack scenarios across real-world enterprise topologies. Our empirical findings demonstrate that our multi-agent autonomous framework slashes Mean Time to Detect (MTTD) from 18.4 minutes to 4.2 seconds and Mean Time to Remediate (MTTR) from 42.6 minutes to 18.2 seconds (a 99.3% reduction) while preserving a 99.6% remediation accuracy against MITRE ATT&CK kill chains. Finally, we formulate open challenges in adversarial prompt-injection resilience, continuous defensive co-evolution, and liability attribution under international cyber law. Index Terms—Autonomous SOC, Security Operations Center, Multi-Agent Systems (MAS), SOAR, Incident Response, MITRE ATT&CK, Dec-POMDP, Defensive AI, Alert Fatigue, Cyber Threat Intelligence.
