Critical hopefulness: how rural gen Z in West Java Indonesia navigate concern, aspiration, and action

Young people in Indonesia are coming of age amid social, economic, and environmental uncertainty, including rising living costs, uneven development, environmental degradation, and concerns about institutional responsiveness. In rural contexts, these conditions are experienced in everyday life and shape how youth interpret their present circumstances and imagine their futures. This study explores how rural Generation Z in West Java construct hope while navigating structural constraints. Using a qualitative photovoice methodology, the study engaged 21 rural youth participants who documented and reflected on their everyday environments through participant-generated photographs and narrative discussions. Data were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis to identify patterns grounded in participants’ accounts. Findings show that critical hopefulness is not a fixed psychological disposition but an emergent and situated process. Three dimensions were identified: ambivalence toward the future, where awareness of structural problems coexists with uncertainty; grounded imaginations of hope, where hope emerges through realistic interpretations of incremental change; and pragmatic agency, where youth sustain hope through informal, collective, and routine participation in their communities. The study contributes to youth studies by conceptualizing critical hopefulness as a dynamic, situated process embedded in everyday life, highlighting how rural Indonesian youth negotiate structural constraints through grounded meaning-making and action.
