Proposal of Internal Cooling Method by Cutting-Edge-Adjacent Plural Microchannels (CPM) for Reduction of Tool Wear

A new internal cooling method by cutting-edge-adjacent plural microchannels (CPM) is proposed to overcome the limitation of cutting temperature reduction. External cooling methods have been used in practice, and internal cooling methods have been studied in the literature to reduce cutting temperature and tool wear, but they have a limited cooling effect since the distance between the highest cutting-temperature point and the cooling area is large. In the proposed cooling method, this cooling distance is greatly reduced to achieve a high cooling effect by utilizing multiple microchannels, and design guidelines for these channels are proposed based on simple analyses in the paper. The proposed method and its superiority against conventional methods are verified through analyses and cutting experiments.
