Studying shielding properties of the PbF2-MoO3-Bi2O3-B2O3 glass ceramic using GEANT4 and MCNP Monte Carlo nuclear codes

PbF2-MoO3-Bi2O3-B2O3 ceramic glass with five samples of PFMBB-1, PFMBB-2, PFMBB-3, PFMBB-4 and PFMBB-5 with different percentages of PbF2 additive was studied for investigating the shielding properties against X-rays with the energy range of 10-100 keV. The GEANT4 and MCNP nuclear codes was used to simulate and calculate the shielding parameters of LAC, MAC, HVL, TVL, MFP, Zeff, Neff and Zeq, and to validate and increase the accuracy of the study, they were compared with the values obtained by online programs of Phy-X/PSD, XCOM, EpiXS and NGCal. The results obtained were very close and show a good agreement between these programs. In the energy of 20 keV, the LAC values calculated by the GEANT4 and MCNP codes for the mentioned samples are (219.057, 217.092), (231.830, 231.432), (244.986, 245.141), (280.412, 278.555) and (295.600, 296.471) cm-1 respectively, This shows that the PFMBB-5 sample, with the highest density value among the other samples, is the best shield against X-rays.
