Anomaloedessa gen. nov. (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomidae): a new Neotropical genus of stink bugs

Abstract The new Neotropical genus of stink bugs Anomaloedessa gen. nov. is proposed to accommodate three species transferred from Edessa : A. pallida (Dallas, 1851) comb. nov., A. inscripta (Walker, 1868) comb. nov., and A. polymita (Distant, 1890) comb. nov., as well as nine new species described herein. The new genus is characterized by the abdomen tapering posteriorly; dorsal surface of the body with irregular, large, coarse punctures in black spots among dense small punctures; humeral angles acuminate and short; evaporatorium with dark line surrounding the metaepisternal area; abdomen ventrally with a U-shaped dark spot; and the superior process of the genital cup partially or completely fused to the dorsal rim and the wall of the pygophore. The new genus is currently distributed in Costa Rica, Panama, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Brazil, and Bolivia. Diagnoses, descriptions, measurements, photographs, line drawings, and distribution maps are presented.
